The Herd Book Society of Zambia
was first established in 1920 and has been responsible for recording pedigrees
for all cattle and sheep within Zambia.
The offices are located in the Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Showgrounds in Lusaka from where the staff coordinates the activities of the society. The membership is countrywide covering all sizes of herds and flocks. The members are organized into breed sections with representation on the Herd Book Council. The section committees are democratically elected on an annual basis and guide policy on the breed section within usual accepted international norms.
Inspections of the stock are carried out by qualified breed inspectors with a representative of the herdbook society also present. For the animals to qualify for pedigree status they must have three generations of pedigree records and pass a visual classification and performance test. Animals with unknown parentage can also be registered, the offspring can then be graded up to pedigree status.
Performance testing is carried out with the assistance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives through the national Artificial Inseminations services and Stud Book of South Africa.
The society holds field days, training courses and other activities in conjunction with other stakeholders in the livestock industry.
Zambia is proud to have been able to supply top quality genetics for export to numerous countries including: Australia, Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, and Zimbabwe for cattle and sheep.
